Somewhere in between Warhol’s Factory period and The September Issue is Frederick Wiseman’s Model, an old school documentary of the modeling industry as it was circa 1980, now showing for two nights at the MoMA. We’re not sure if it’s art house or ANTM without Tyra Banks, but either way it’s all sorts of fabulousness. Wiseman follows models and artists from the currently nonexistent Zoli agency through casting calls, car shoots, pantyhose ads, and an Oscar de la Renta show (with a young Jerry Hall!). The black-and-white, gritty shooting style washes out all the stuff we hate about 80’s style (blue eyeshadow, teased hair) but gives us plenty of excessive glam. We’re ready to slip on some spandex, blast some Bananarama, and take a Checker Cab to Studio 54.
Model is screening 8p.m. tonight at MoMA and 4p.m. on Monday, March 22.
